As opposed to the prediction and pronouncement of September, January is a time of reflection, looking back on the year that has elapsed.
Along these lines, JANUARY Biannual is not concerned with the timely reportage of new things, instead focussing on lasting impressions of fashion, art, literature and performance. Pieces and incidences that do not require momentary hype or Anna Wintour’s bob to be valid.
The debut edition of JANUARY is on shelves across the globe this week. It’s a full-colour tome, on beautiful thick stock, encased in a cover so crisp and white it’s best to remain at arm’s length when you have coffee in hand.
On the pages within you’ll find Amos Fricke‘s stark photography of Berlin – a plural study of the walls in the city but not ‘the’ wall, an interview with artist and Central Saint Martin’s womenswear teacher Howard Tangye (who has taught the likes of John Galliano and Stella McCartney), Akiko Keuchi‘s knotted silk thread sculptures that look frail and fine as if they have been sketched in pen, and my favourite – a shoot drawing on the Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson archives, against a canvas of local rising designers including Dress Up, Ellison, and Phong Chi Lai.

Gus McLaren is an Australian artist, animator and potter. He was born in 1923. As a young man he worked on The Argus newspaper as a cartoonist. His work was popular for a number of years. He also was a cartoonist on the British Commonwealth Occupation News, a newspaper for the British Commonwealth Force in Japan.
He began potting in 1955 and was one of the founding members in 1958 of the Potters Cottage in Victoria.
Gus also created the "Freddo Frog" character for MacRobertson Chocolates in 1962!!!

Hi Everyone!
This week we are starting to slip into our Spring/Summer
wardrobes.
It's certainly been warm enough.
In the northern hemisphere they are previewing Spring Summer 2012.
I have been glued to Style.com to see things fresh from the runway and naturally
I was drawn to my favourites.

Karen Walker's American Girl was inspired by the intense 70's film Taxi Driver pushing through lots
of 70's/40's looks in an incredible frenzy of print and colour.
It's exhilarating.

A Detacher was described by Style.com as Lanvin for Brooklyn girls
(or Brisbane girls as the case may be).
The reference was to Mona's pattern making skills and her use of wit
and surrealism in her approach.
Mona drew upon prints and textures from Grandma's House to bring a beautiful
mix of colour and punchy 60's prints in modern shapes.
Fashion week moves to London next which is always a buzz.

Her entrance was via textile design at East Sydney TAFE. The repeat print designs she specialised in there became the basis for Milk From A Thistle’s style – bold, engaging prints on wearable and accessible garments.

Launched in 2006, Milk From A Thistle has grown season on season, as Danielle’s palette has broadened to include digital prints and unprinted garments that showcase the flowing easy fit that’s the label’s staple.

Inspiration
Outdoor clothing designers Setsumasa and Mami Kobayashi built this weekend retreat in the Chichibu mountain range northwest of Tokyo from locally harvested larch wood and removable fiberplastic walls. The ‘platform for living’ (not to be referred to as a house) runs on solar energy and has electricity, hot water, wifi, iPads and other bare necessities. The yellow not-quite-geodesic dome tents are the bedrooms.

The Opinel knife was invented by Joseph Opinel in 1890 in Savoie as a simple working man's or peasant's knife.It proved popular with the local farmers, herdsmen, and paysans-vignerons (peasant winemakers) of the area

Originally sold as a simple working man's knife, the Opinel has since become an iconic symbol of French culture and lifestyle. Pablo Picasso used an Opinel to carve his sculptures, while Roger Frison-Roche, the Savoyard alpine guide and mountaineer, never made an ascent without carrying an Opinel along.Éric Tabarly, the long-distance solo sailor and yachtsman, swore by the Opinel, which he always carried aboard his sailing yacht, the Pen Duick.

We have a range of sizes in the traditional style (no6 to no9), starting from $20 (above) and box sets (below) complete with pouch and steel from $75.

In 1985 the Victoria and Albert Museum in London selected the Opinel as part of an exhibit celebrating the “100 most beautiful products in the world”, featuring the Opinel alongside the Porsche 911 sports car and the Rolex watch.The Opinel was also selected as one of the 999 best designs in "Phaidon Design Classics"and has been exhibited by the New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) as a design masterpiece.

Openiel is still produced in France and the company is still run by the Opinel family.

Well at least it keeps them...busy.

It's taken a few years for the bike phenomenon to REALLY take off

in Brisbane but it has finally happened.

I guess the climate and the hills haven't really helped!

Domestique is a cool and extremely limited collection from passionate

riders in Sydney that didn't want to wear traditional bike sportswear.

My favourite design is the embroidered t-shirt, inspired by the classic RL Polo shirt.

Brisbane band Last Dinosaurs played at our FRED PERRY party a couple of years ago

as a young, up and coming band.

I saw they're latest video on Rage last Friday night so they are obviously doing well!

They are playing at Woodland tonight as part of a huge Australian tour.
